Welcome to Hillsborough, County Down, Northern Ireland

Hillsborough's Churches

The Parish Church of St. Malachy

Superbly sited on a hillside off the Main Street and near to Hillsborough Fort. The approach to the Church is along and avenue of lime trees. The Parish Church of St Malachy was built in 1636 and restored in the 18th century by Wills Hill, the first Marquis of Downshire.

The church stands on the summit of a gentle slope in the centre of the village some 300 yards from the main street. The two entrance gates, each with 18th century stone-built lodges form the screen through which can be seen the beautiful lawn which extends from the gates to the front of the Church.

The Parish Churchyard is a special place situated to the north of the church of St Malachy and is surrounded by trees and the sound of village life. Here may be found the burial place of the Harty family. The famous conductor and composer Sir Hamilton Harty’s ashes are marked by a bird bath on the south side of the church. Near the lychgate to the left a stone records the burial place of Bishop Richard Mant, the hymn writer.

Internally the high quality of the woodwork really needs to be seen to be appreciated with it's plain oak pews, tall octagonal pulpit and bishops throne.

In the evening on the hour the bells used to chime a hymn tune every hour until a recent complaint to the local council Environmental Health Department silenced them between 10-00pm and 7-00 am . Thus came to the end of a proud tradition which had been going on for over 230 years which has upset many villagers.

The church today is essentially the same as it was when Wills Hill completed his work of enlargement and restoration before being opened for public worship in 1772. Major restoration work was carried out between 1951 and 1956 and recently in 2005, 2006 and 2008

Hillsborough Presbyterian Church

Built in the traditional 'Meeting House Style' the first Church on the present site was built in 1833 on land granted by the Marquis of Downshire. The Church was completely rebuilt in 1885.
The congregation has grown to over 500 families in recent years, coinciding with a rapid expansion in the housing available within the village and surrounding area.

Sunday morning worship is at 10-30am as well as occasional evening services at 6.30pm. The Church actively attempts to make it's children and young people an essential part of the church family, recognising that we are all at different stages of our faith journey. On Sunday mornings young people of secondary school age attend "Genesis" where they have a light breakfast prior to Bible study. Primary school children attend Sunday School from part way through the service.

In worship we strive seek to strike a balance between the traditional and the contemporary. Members take an active role in helping lead many of our services. Our praise is lead by a robed choir.

Various organisations meet throughout the week. These include an Adult Study Group, Indoor Bowling Club, Badminton Club, Girls' Brigade, Boys' Brigade, Presbyterian Women's Group, Evergreens (for senior citizens), Parent & Toddler Group, Helping Hands Knitting Group and Young Adult's Group.
